THIRTEEN GHOSTS (2001)

Label: Scream Factory

Rating: R
Duration: 91 Minutes
Region Code: A
Audio: English DTS-HD MA Stereo 2.0 and 5.1 Surround with Optional English Subtitles
Video: 1080p HD Widescreen (1.85:1)
Director: Steve Beck
Cast: Tony Shalhoub, Shannon Elizabeth, Embeth Davidtz, Matthew Lillard, Alec Roberts, JR Bourne, Rah Digga, F. Murray Abraham, Matthew Harrison, Jacob Rupp

Dark Castle's 2001 remake of William Castle's 13 Ghosts was a state-of-the-art take on the original film that managed to incorporate the Illusion-O viewer that accompanied the original theatrical version of the film in the '60's. Castle was known for his larger-than-life personality, he was the Alfred Hitchcock of schlock, and for the gimmicks he used during his films. Appropriately the remake, directed by Steve Beck (Ghost Ship) formerly a visual effects art director at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), packs the film with big visuals and some fantastic ghosts design by Howard Berger (ex-KNB) and his effects team.

A financially struggling family lead by widow Arthur Kriticos (Tony Shalhoub) move into an elegant and quite elaborate steel-and-glass mansion they've inherited from their eccentric ghost-hunting uncle Cyrus Kriticos (F. Murray Abraham, Amadeus). The strange house is completely walled from exterior to interior in moving panes of glass inscribed with Latin phrases. A psychic named Dannis Rafkin (Matthew Lillard, Scooby-Doo) who worked for Arthur arrives at the house and tries to warn them away.

Before they can listen the glass walls of the home begin to move, they're linked to a clockwork mechanism, prohibiting them from leaving the premises. As they begin to search for a way out they find a set of spectral glasses that allow them to see that the house was built to imprison twelve ghosts that Arthur captured, the Latin inscriptions on the glass are entrapment spells, and as the glass walls of the ghost-powered house continues to move they release those ghosts, posing a very real threat to the family and the other inhabitants of the house.

I saw this at the cinema back inthe day, I was stoked to see it too, and it mostly delivered the popcorn thrills I was looking for at the time, from the opening scene features an irrigation truck spraying blood in a junkyard I was all-in. It's a great cast, including already mentioned cast, plus fun turns from Shannon Elizabeth (American Pie) and rapper Rah Digga, but the real star of the house is the fantastic glass-walled house with it's mousetrap-style mechanization. As the Dark Castle remake of The House on Haunted Hill was amazing in it's own right so too is this, a modern steel and glass mansion that wows in it's intricacies and artistry.

After the house the other stars are the ghosts that are imprisoned in the house, as you might have guessed there are thirteen total, and you can tell a lot of thought was put into each of them, but my favorites are  The Hammer (Herbert Duncanson), The Jackal (Shayne Wyler), The Juggernaut (John De Santis) and Shawna Loyer as The Angry Princess, they are a sight to behold, and Howard Berger and his team did fantastic work on them, if I had been younger when I saw this movie I would have had nightmares for weeks after seeing this movie.

As the villain of the film F. Murray Abraham is the perfect mix of big personality somewhat campy villainy, aside from the ghost gimmick of the film he is the single most William Castle-esque element of the film, he's right up there with Geoffrey Rush from The House On Haunted Hill remake, I loved it.  It's also ghot a good run time of just ninety-minutes, it's moves briskly, and while I thought some of the cat and mouse game of the human trying to hide from the ghosts wore a bit thin I liked the devious twists and turns as characters are revealed to have hidden agendas, and again, those cool-looking practical ghosts look amazing, and for a popcorn horror-flick that's more than enough for me, quite an entertaining romp.

Audio/Video: Thirteen Ghosts (2001) arrives on Blu-ray from Scream Factory in 1080p HD framed in the original 1.85:1 widescreen. This is not advertised as a new HD scan so I assume it's an older HD master, that said
it looks strong in motion, the grain field is natural looking an unobtrusive, fine detail is pleasing and the blacks are solid. Colors pop when called upon, it's not super vibrant but it definitely has some pleasing splashes of color, when the irrigation tanker starts streaming torrents of blood in the opening scene it brought a smile to my face.

Audio comes by way of both English DTS-HD MA stereo 2.0 and 5.1 surround with optional English subtitles. The stereo track is fine, well-balanced and clean, but the surround option is the way to go, this is a bonkers surround track with plenty of fun activity throughout, suiting the gimmicky pedigree of the film.

Onto the extras we begin with a brand new audio commentary with director Steve Beck moderated by Justin Beam, this being recently recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, with them recording this over Skype, but the audio quality is still pretty decent. director Steve Beck moderated by Justin Beahm does good work keeping the conversation on-track and interetsing.

Up next is the 10-min'Haunted in Canada' with actress Shannon Elizabeth who recalls meeting with producer Joel Silver, and how big a fan she was of Xanadu which he worked on, though she says he seemed less than happy to be reminiscing about it. She says she's never seen the original William Castle film to this day, and that she liked working with director Steve Beck who was collaborative and fun it was, the rewrites and re-shoots on the shoot, working with Tony Shalhoub who like her Lebanese and a father figure to her on set, and what it was like spending time as a young adult alone in Canada. Shannon also gets into working with Mathew Lillard, the fantastically elaborate sets of the glass-walled house, working with the actors who played the ghosts, attending horror cons and the fan-love for this film.

'The Voice of Reason' is a 14-min interview with actor Matthew Harrison (Garage Sale Mysteries) who played Damon the doomed "ghost reclimant" in the film, first getting into the audition process, what he liked about his character and the realization that he got to say the title of the film in a bit of dialogue, and getting nervous when he realized he'd probably be in the trailer nbecause of that. He talks about his awe of F. Murray Abraham, and how relaxed Schalhoub was on set despite the pressures. He also tells a fun story of Mathew Lillard and how energetic he was on-set including a story of how he pumped himself for a take. He also touches on the make-up process and how some icy-cold fake blood enhanced his performance.

In the 13-min 'The Juggernaut Speaks' 6'9" actor John DeSantis who played the hulking ghost The Juggernaut. He opens with movies that caught his attention and made him want to be inside the film industry, Aliens and Star Wars, joining the military and then getting work as a background actor before landing larger roles, including Lurch from The New Addams Family (1998). He gets into the backstory of his serial killer characters, the make-up appliances, and shooting the fight sequence with Lilliard, as well as his opinion of the film and fan reaction to it.

'The Hammer Speaks' is a 6-min interview with actor Herbert Duncanson who played the ghost "The Hammer". He gets into landing  the role after another actor dropped out, the character's origins as a slave who was accused of raping a white woman, and how the spikes protruding from his body and head were nailed into him as punishment, also saying that it took about five hours to apply it and about three to get it off. He also gets the re-shoot of the ending which allowed for a happier ending for the ghosts, and how that was shot on 9/11, which made for a strange day of shooting.

Producer Gilbert Adler give a 6-min interview in 'Sophomore Spookshow', he talks about the formation of the Dark Castle production company during the run of HBO's Tales from the Crypt with Robert Zemeckis and Joel Silver, the first film from them being the remake of William Castle's The House on Haunted Hill, and being concerned about making a film that would please the William Castle estate. He gets into production designer Sean Hargreaves and what a great vision he had for the film, even though he was hesitant about him at first. Saying that he and director Steve Beck didn't always see eye to eye, but that conflict is not always a bad thing if it makes for a better film, and noting how difficult it was to work with all that glass for a myriad of reason.

I was a bit sad we didn't get new interview with producer Joel Silver, director Steve Beck (Ghost Ship), production designer Sean Hargreaves, Howard Berger from KNB FX Group or actors Mathew Lillard, Tony Shalhoub or F. Murray Abraham, and Shawna Loyer who plays the "Angry Princess" ghost, but they are represented in the vintage 18-min featurette 'Thirteen Ghosts Revealed' which has a bunch of behind-the-scenes video detailing the making of the film, including applying the prosthetic and make-up FX on the ghosts, it might be vintage but it's a very high quality featurette.

The archival 14-min 'Ghost Files: A Haunted Houseful of Poltergeist Profiles' is an extensive series of character bios for the films ghosts, it is surprisingly detailed and thorough, all narrated by F. Murray Abraham.

Also included is the 43-minute original EPK which looks to be raw, unedited footage used for the 'Thirteen Ghosts Revealed' featurette with extended interviews and behind-the-scene video footage. The disc is tidily buttoned-up with an archival audio commentary with director Steve Beck, production designer Sean Hargreaves and special makeup effects artist Howard Berger, a 2-min trailer and 3 min of TV spots.

The single-disc releases comes housed in a standard Blu-ray keepcase with a reversible sleeve of artwork featuring a new illustration  by Joel Robinson and the original theatrical artwork, the disc itself features the new artwork, as does the limited edition slipcover.

Scream Factory do right by Thirteen Ghosts, it looks solid and the extras are excellent. Of the late 90's/00's remakes this still ranks pretty high for me, a very entertaining popcorn fright flick.

Eureka Entertainment to release MR. VAMPIRE, Ricky Lau’s influential and genre bending horror-comedy, presented from a brand new 2K restoration making its worldwide debut on Blu-ray as part of the Eureka Classics range from July 20th 2020. The first print-run of 2000 copies will feature a Limited Edition O-Card Slipcase and Collector’s Booklet.

One of the most genre-defining (not to mention genre-defying!) horror-comedies imaginable, and one of the key Hong Kong blockbuster hits of the 1980s, the popularity and influence of Mr. Vampire cannot be overstated. Spawning at least four sequels and countless spin-offs and imitations, this Hong Kong horror-comedy to end them all was an understandable crowd-pleasing sensation, and triggered a wave of jiangshi ("hopping vampire") movies. Produced by the legendary Sammo Hung, the original Mr. Vampire is essential viewing for anyone interested in the 80s golden age of Hong Kong cinema.

In a career-making performance, the late Lam Ching-ying is Master Kau, expert on all matters of the supernatural. When Kau and his two bumbling students, Man Choi (famous comedian Ricky Hui) and Chou (Fist of Legend's Chin Siu-ho), exhume a corpse for reburial, things go frighteningly and hilariously awry when the cadaver is revealed to be a hopping vampire. With the undead on the loose, Master Kau is blamed for the chaos, and must work with his students to put the spirits to rest before the vampire's own granddaughter (80s Hong Kong action icon Moon Lee) gets bitten. Fighting the vampires with everything from sticky rice to filing down the bloodsucker's fangs, the trio must defeat an increasing number of ghoulish dangers.

Director Ricky Lau would go on to make several more Mr. Vampire successors (as well as the related Sammo Hung sequel Encounters of the Spooky Kind II, with Lam Ching-ying as another vampire-battling master), but nothing tops the original for its classic fusion of screams and laughs, and it has never looked as eye-poppingly, vampire-hoppingly beautiful as this new Blu-ray special edition.

REVENGE OF THE LIVING DEAD GIRLS (1987)

Label: Severin Films
Release Date: July 28th 2020
Duration: 82 Minutes
Region Code: Region-FREE
Rating: Unrated
Audio: French DTS-HD MA 2.0 Mono, English Dolby Digital 2.0  with Optional English Subtitles
Video: 1080p HD Widescreen (1.66:1)
Director: Pierre B. Reinhard
Cast: Cornélia Wilms, Kathryn Charly, Anthea Wyler, Véronique Catanzaro, Sylvie Novak, Laurence Mercier

Sexed-up French splatter film Revenge of the Living Dead Girls (1986) is a trashy bit of undead fun with a convoluted plot that involves corporate tainted milk, toxic waste, good old fashioned greed and revenge, all wrapped up with oodles of sex and nudity and some surprisingly strong, if shit-looking, low-budget gore, including an undead floozy gnawing some guy's dick off!

This slice of Euro-sleaze starts off like any cheap porno, with a horny milk-tanker truck driver picking up a woman hitchhiker with a twisted ankle. He helps her up into his cab, looking up her skirt of course, and then a short distance down the road pulls off and takes her into a stone-walled grain silo to make her feel better, wink-wink, which involves giving her some fur-pie finger-love. Meanwhile a mysterious stranger on a motorcycle pulls up to the milk tanker and dumps some sort of orange colored poison into it. In the aftermath three local women dies after ingesting the tainted-milk.

At this same time we are privy to a German chemical company head honcho who is illegally dumping toxic waste from the factory in the ground at the local cemetery, which is where the three milk-poisoned local girls are buried. At that same chemical company the big bosses secretary is going to great lengths to set-up her boss, filming him in the act with a prostitute that she has hired - there's certainly a lot of weird little subplots
happening in this trashy little zombie movie!

As what looks to be a direct result of the toxic waste being dumped at the cemetery the corpses of the three women who dies from drinking the tainted-milk rise from their graves and begin to exact revenge on those who seem to be responsible for their deaths. Now let's take a look at these zombies, for starters they've only been dead a few days at the most and they look like they've been rotting for years down in the dirt. All of their killings are done with a strangely perverse amount of sexuality, at one point even jamming a sword up a women's naughty bits, in a wonderfully tasteless touch after a bizarre lesbian encounter with the undead. The sword-wielding zombie even takes a moment to wipe the blood from the sword blade onto the victim's pubic hair. Another interesting thing to note is that the zombie's faces and skin on their hands are withered and mottled gray, but the rest of their bodies are young and nubile, each with a nice sets of tits might I add, it sort of reminded be of the witch hags from The Beastmaster(1982) which absolutely gave me nightmares as a kid.

All of this is filmed with an aesthetic that can probably be best described as French pornographer attempting to imitate the erotic splatter of something like Jean Rollin's The Living Dead Girl (1982), which seems to be exactly what's happening here, but the end result is something more akin to late-era Bruno Mattie along the lines of Island of the Living Dead(2007).

The zombie and gore effects were done by the late Benoît Lestang, who would go onto work on City of Lost Children (1995), Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) and Martyrs (2008) is This is not his best work, I am assuming he was hampered by lack of experience at this time and what looks to have been a tiny, tiny budget, but they so work in a schlocky
Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things(1972) sort of way. There's a shocker twist at the end that very end of the film that also allows for some forgiveness of the zombie effects. At times you can see the actors natural skin peering out through gaps in the rubbery undead face coverings, it's a shitty movie for sure, but it's shitty movie that was never boring.

The shocker sting at the end of this thing is a real WTF-er, I was in stitches when it all unfolded, while surely it was meant to reinforce the corporate greed/comeuppance angle the film had been toying with it stinks to high heaven, a ripe and odorous finale to a wonderful fun shit-film.

Audio/Video: The longer 82-min cut of Revenge of the Living Dead Girls (1987) arrives on region-free Blu-ray from Severin Films framed in the original 1.66:1 widescreen in 1080p HD. It's got a bit of white speckling and some frame damage in certain spots, but overall it's a very pleasing presentation with a bit of baked-in softness due to the original cinematography. Audio comes by way of an French DTS-HD MA 2.0 or dubbed-English Dolby Digital 2.0 with optional English subtitles. Audio is clean and largely free of ear-sores like hiss and distortion, I don't speak French but the loose English dubbed dialogue was never hard to decipher, and the cheesy synth-driven score from Christian Bonneau sounded pretty great.

Extras are all in French with English subtitles, beginning with the 13-min 'Revisiting the Revenge' interview with late Special Effects Artist Benoit Lestang and producer/writer Jean-Claude Roy from 2005. Topics covered are the casting and filming of the splatter flick, getting into how Lestang came onto the project, a recommend from director Jean Rollin (Zombie Lake), and how some of the gory special effects were archived, with the writer saying that the film sacrificed better actors to allow more money fro the gore FX. Roy does a lot of the talking with the late Lestang kind of looking at him like he's full of shit at certain points.

Director Pierre B. Reinhard sits down for a 22-min interview in 'The Revenge', getting into his early life at university, getting into film as an editor on french porn films, and of course the making of this film and it's locations, plus the many the difficulties of making a low-budget film in a very short amount of time.

The last of the interviews comes by way of an archival 15-min 'Inside Studio Lestang' with the special effects Artist Benoît Lestang from 2008. He walks us around his studio and talks of how he makes latex wounds and nose pieces, experimenting with different latex mixtures, shooting his own short films, the benefits of digital cinematography, his love of horror and in particular John Carpenter's The Thing(1982). The disc is buttoned-up with a three minute trailer for the film and a very brief Easter Egg.

The single-disc release standard release comes in a black keepcase withe a single-sided sleeve of artwork containing what looks to be a new illustration, the disc itself has a different image on it, looking to be the key art from Severin's limited edition 2-disc release of the film.

Special Features:
- Revisiting the Revenge - Interview with Special Effects Artist Benoit Lestang and Writer Jean-Claude Roy (13 min)
- The Revenge - Interview with Director Pierre B. Reinhard (22 min)
- Inside Studio Lestang - Interview with Special Effects Artist Benoît Lestang (15 min)
- Theatrical Trailer (3 min)

Revenge of the Living Dead Girls (1986) is a trashy bit of Eurosleaze that wears it's low-budget and bad-acting on it's sleeve, but it goes for the sleazy erotic thrills and cheap gore effects with a lot of gusto, and I love that about it. The standard version Blu-ray from Severin is quite a nice presentation for this cult item, an attractive A/V presentation with some quite good archival extras, and attractive artwork. Severin also released this as a limited edition 2-disc set with a soundtrack CD and reversible sleeve of artwork, but the extras are the same.

MONDO BALORDO (1964)

Label: Severin Films

Region Code: Region-Free
Rating: Unrated
Duration: 87 Minutes
Audio: English DTS-HD MA 2.0 Mono with Optional English Subtitles
Video: 1080p HD Widescreen (1.66:1)
Editors: Enzo Alfonzo & Fred Von Bernewitz
Narration: Boris Karloff

In the dusty trash bin of bizarre travelogues films from the 60's we find Mondo Balordo (1964), a mondo film with a bit of distinction, not so much in that it explores sights previously unseen from around the globe, but in that it's narrated by Boris Karloff (Frankenstein). Karloff gleefully narrates this journey into the strange as he guides us through the titillating world of knee-high prostitutes and tiny zoot-suited rock n' roll crooners, and as we witness to animals tearing at each others flesh and indigenous people launching spears into the staged carcass of an elephant. We also get a glimpse of Asian rope bondage, several incarnations of prostitution, gay bars, transgenders cabaret, spiritual exorcism and other topics that were taboo in the early 60's.

Truthfully there's not much here to crow about as mondo travelogues go, it's a somewhat random assortment of weird stuff from around the world assembled from cheap stock footage by not-so-savy editors, but this one's got a bit more punch since they slapped on a narration by Boris Karloff. If I had seen this as a kid it would have been a trip seeing anything with nude women being narrated by a voice that, at that point, I would have only associated with The Grinch Who Stole Christmas animated Christmas special. It's that narration, with Karloff clearly having a fun time delivering his wordy scripted pages, that what makes this a bit more fun than your average slapdash mondo travelogue.

Audio/Video: Mondo Balordo (1967) debuts on region-free Blu-ray from Severin Films framed in 1.66:1 widescreen in 1080p HD, sourced from a 4K scan from the inter-negative. The source is in great shape with a nice pattern of film grain, but as the footage is pulled from such a variety sources the quality fluctuates throughout. Some of it is marred by white speckling, frame damage and scratches, but overall it's quite pleasing for a travelogue film of this sort and vintage, I dig the grindhouse aesthetic of it. Audio comes by way of English DTS-HD MA 2.0 mono with optional English subtitles, and like the video the quality the audio is inconsistent, but Boris Karloff's narration sounds terrific, capturing him in fine form with the humor of it easily discernible in the delivery.

Extras include a scratchy looking 3-min trailer for the film plus a bonus travelogue films, the 92-min The Orientals (1960) that was scanned from a 35mm print sourced the Something Weird archives.

The single-disc release arrives in a black keepcase with a one-sided sleeve of artwork featuring the cool-looking original movie poster, the same artwork is featured on the disc inside. It's got a colorful spine with pink lettering on a yellow background that stands out on the shelf.

Special Features:

- The Orientals - 1960 Italian Mondo, scanned from 35mm print from the Something Weird archives (92 min)
- Trailer

These mondo travelogue films are an acquired taste, I am not a huge fan of them myself, so I won't be giving this a high recommend, but if you're one of those cinema loonies with a craving for slapdash journeys into the strange, the bizarre and the forbidden, this offers plenty of it with the added bonus that it's narrated by Karloff.

THE WILD, WILD WORLD OF
JAYNE MANSFIELD (1968)

Label: Severin Films
Region Code: Region-FREE
Rating: Unrated
Duration: 90 Minutes
Audio: English DTS-HD MA Mono with Optional English Subtitles.
Video: 1080p HD Widescreen (1.85:1)
Cast: Jayne Mansfield, Mickey Hargitay

Director: Arthur Knight, Joel Holt, Charles W. Bround Jr.

Synopsis: From producer Dick Randall (Escape from Women's PrisonPieces) comes the notorious Mondo mash-up in which a Jayne Mansfield sound-alike narrates footage of Jayne being chased by paparazzi in Rome, wearing bikinis in Cannes and partying with drag queens in Paris, before suddenly veering into graphic photos of her horrific accident and a posthumous tour of her Hollywood mansion. Mickey Hargitay co-stars in this "deranged kaleidoscope of titillating insanity" (Film Threat), scanned from the 35mm Something Weird archival print.

The mondo exploitation film The Wild, Wild World of Jayne Mansfield (1968) is another oddball travelogue film, this time starring the busty-blonde starlet Jayne Mansfield who is on a European vacation which takes her to Rome and Paris, before heading back to the U.S. by way of New York and Hollywood. Along the way she tosses coins in a famous Italian water fountain, is chased down the street by the Italian paparazzi, and has her ass grabbed by guys who are still fifty years away from #metoo. While still in Europe she visits gay bars, the Eiffel Tower, rocks out to a band, attends a drag contest, shows up at a best-breast contest, splashes around in a bikini, visits a nudist beach, all while more often than not holding her pet Chihuahua like it's an expensive purse.

The tone of it this is light-weight and fun, and then the film does something that sort of puts you through the wringer, it dives face first into the star's tragic death. You see this thing was started as a travelogue
starring the busty starlet, but when she died before it was finished producer Dick Randell (Pieces) did what any exploitation producer would have done, he found a way to cash-in on the tragedy, finishing the film with what I believe is a stand-in for Mansfield in certain scenes to pad out the run time and then hired a voice actor to imitate the breathless voiced vixen throughout the film, and whoever it is that did the narration did a decent job, sounding ditsy and fun. Not that I am an expert on what she sounded like, to be honest I have never actually seen another  Jayne Mansfield film, other than the few shots of her nude that have been stitched into this slice of exploitation.

If all this travelogue offered was some imitative dubbing and a stand-in actress to finish making the planned movie that would be one thing, but the movie takes it a step further, going from frequenting a nightclub in L.A. to actual black and white crime scene photos of the crash that killed her! Awful stuff, a horrific accident, there's even a shot of her beloved Chihuahua, seen in her arms throughout the film, laying dead among the wreckage. It's one of the most exploitative real-life things I think I've ever seen, the whole thing is capped off with home video footage of her husband Mickey Hargitay and their two young sons at their mansion mourning her death.

Keep in mind that while I knew of her death and the tragic circumstances, including that her three young children were in the backseat asleep, and miraculously survived, Marisca Hargitay of Law &amp: Order: SVU, but I had no idea that it would be part of the actual movie, never mind as explicitly as it is. The illustration on the sleeve of artwork is such a fun, colorful advertisement of what awaits you inside, so that was a tasteless, albeit wonderful bit if salacious exploitation.

Audio/Video: The Wild, Wild world of Jayne Mansfield (1968) makes it's worldwide debut on Blu-ray in 1080p HD framed in 1.85:w widescreem, sourced from scan an archival 35mm film print from the Something Weird archives. It's got a serious grindhouse patine to it, it's well-worn with lots of scratches, deep fading and speckles, it's not pretty. It's a mic of black and white footage and color films, but the color is largely destaurated giving it a sepiatone feel, it's not attractive but it didn't put me off it either, it sort of enhanced the seediness of it all. Audio comes by way of English DTS-HD MA mono with optional English subtitles, again it;s not perfection but it's perfectly suited to the film source.

Extras begin with a non-anamorphic standard definition video master of the film, the condition and colors are much better but it's SD, but if you're really put off by the scratchy looking main feature it might be a better alternative, but i still prefer the grindhouse presentation.

The 6-min 'The Devil & Jayne'is an interview with Anton LaVey biographer Blanche Barton, who gets into Jayne Mansfield's interest in Anton LaVey and the Church of Satan, which was  real shocker for me, including a curse placed on her manager after he moved some stuff around from an altar or something, and how that may have contributed to the crash that killed Mansfield. We also get a bonus film, Wild, Weird, Wonderful Italians (1966), which was scanned from 35mm print from also the Something Weird archives. The disc is finished up with brief trailer for the main feature.

The single-disc release arrives in a black keepcase with a one-sided sleeve of artwork featuring the original illustrated movie poster, which is an awesome illustration  that's so bubbly and fun, the same artwork is featured on the disc inside. It's got a colorful spine with yellow lettering on a turquoise background with the Jayne peeking out at you from the spine.

Special Features:
- SD Video Master Version of Feature.
- The Devil & Jayne - Interview with Anton LaVey Biographer Blanche Barton (6 min)
- Wild, Weird, Wonderful Italians (1966) Italian Mondo, scanned from 35mm print from the Something Weird archives (76 min)
- Trailer (1 min)

The Wild, Wild World of Jayne Mansfield (1968) is another shameless slab of exploitation, not unlike Severin's release of Mondo Balordo (1964) it's a mixed bag of salacious and light-hearted stuff, enhanced by the presence of a star, this time around being the actual appearance of doomed sexpot Jayne Mansfield, plus it has the gut-punch finale that caught me by surprise, with the gruesome crime scene photos of her actual death. It's not gonna be for everyone, but if you're of the right temperament it's sort of fascinating.

The Goonies
From the imagination of Steven Spielberg, The Goonies plunges a band of small heroes into a swashbuckling surprise-around-every corner quest beyond their wildest dreams! Following a mysterious treasure map into a spectacular underground realm of twisting passages, outrageous booby-traps and a long-lost pirate ship full of golden doubloons, the kids race to stay one step ahead of a family of bumbling bad guys… and a mild-mannered monster with a face only a mother could love.

The Goonies stars Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Academy Award® nominee (2009) Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, Avengers: Endgame), Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys franchise), Martha Plimpton (TV’s “Raising Hope”), Ke Huy Quan (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) Joe Pantoliano (The Matrix) and Lupe Ontiveros (TV’s “Lies in Plain Sight”).

The Goonies was directed by Richard Donner (Superman) and written by Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter series, Mrs. Doubtfire) from a story by executive producer Steven Spielberg. Donner produced with Harvey Bernhard (The Lost Boys) and Spielberg executive produced with Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy (Indiana Jones series, Back to the Future, Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

Beetlejuice
What’s a couple of stay-at-home ghosts to do when their beloved home is taken over by trendy yuppies? They call on Beetlejuice, the afterlife’s freelance bio-exorcist to scare off the family – and everyone gets more than she, he or it bargains for! Tim Burton guides this PG-rated comedy monsterpiece whose stars include Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, and Winona Ryder. And Michael Keaton is Beetlejuice, the ghost with the most who flings one-liners, spins into grotesque forms, gobbles insects, and who just can’t leave the ladies (living or dead) alone. Ghoul love it!

Beetlejuice was brought to life from the imaginative mind of Tim Burton who went on to produce and direct some of the most visually stunning films of our time such as Batman, Edward Scissorhands, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Beetlejuice also received an Academy Award® for Best Makeup with renowned makeup artist and three-time Oscar-winner Ve Neill, and went on to be ranked on AFI's Top 100 list of Funniest American Movies.

Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes has made his reputation finding the truth at the heart of the most complex mysteries. With the aid of Dr. John Watson, his trusted ally, the renowned "consulting detective" is unequaled in his pursuit of criminals of every stripe, whether relying on his singular powers of observation, his remarkable deductive skills, or the blunt force of his fists. But now a storm is gathering over London, a threat unlike anything that Holmes has ever confronted...and just the challenge he's looking for. After a string of brutal, ritualistic murders, Holmes and Watson arrive just in time to save the latest victim and uncover the killer: the unrepentant Lord Blackwood. As he approaches his scheduled hanging, Blackwood--who has terrorized inmates and jailers alike with his seeming connection to dark and powerful forces--warns Holmes that death has no power over him and, in fact, his execution plays right into Blackwood's plans. And when, by all indications, Blackwood makes good on his promise, his apparent resurrection panics London and confounds Scotland Yard. But to Holmes, the game is afoot. Racing to stop Blackwood's deadly plot, Holmes and Watson plunge into a world of the dark arts and startling new technologies, where logic is sometimes the best crime-fighting weapon...but where a good right hook will often do the job.

From Village Roadshow Pictures and director Guy Ritchie (Snatch, RocknRolla), Sherlock Holmes stars Academy Award™ nominee Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man series), Academy Award™ nominee Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley), Rachel McAdams (Wedding Crashers, The Notebook) and Mark Strong (RocknRolla, Syriana, Shazam).

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Around the globe, headlines break the news: a scandal takes down an Indian cotton tycoon; a Chinese opium trader dies of an apparent overdose; bombings in Strasbourg and Vienna; the death of an American steel magnate... no one sees the connective thread between these seemingly random events—no one, that is, except the great Sherlock Holmes, who has discerned a deliberate web of death and destruction. At its center sits a singularly sinister spider: Moriarty. Holmes’ investigation into Moriarty’s plot becomes more dangerous as it leads him and Watson out of London to France, Germany and finally Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead, and moving perilously close to completing his ominous plan. If he succeeds, it will not only bring him immense wealth and power but alter the course of history.

From Village Roadshow Pictures and filmmaker Guy Ritchie (“Sherlock Holmes”), Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, stars two-time Academy Award® nominees Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man series) and Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley) along with Rachel McAdams (Wedding Crashers, The Notebook), Kelly Reilly (Sherlock Holmes), Eddie Marsan (War Horse), Geraldine James (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Jared Harris (TV’s “Mad Men”), Stephen Fry (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), and Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

Available Digitally on Kino Now

Kino Lorber is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of Bacurau, the critically-acclaimed, award-winning Brazilian "Psychedelic" Western-thriller directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, and starring Sônia Braga and Udo Kier. Blending genre filmmaking with sociopolitical commentary, Bacurau has been compared to the Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone as well as the Oscar-winning Parasite with its themes of class disparity.

A unique mash-up of the Western, horror, and sci-fi genres, Bacurau is a Dystopian, pulse-pounding thriller about a small community in Brazil who bands together to defend their village after they are besieged by a group of armed mercenaries.

Bacurau has been a hit with critics and festival audiences alike. It was chosen as an Official Selection of the New York Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and was named as a New York Times Critic's Pick.

In response to closure of theaters due to COVID-19, Kino Lorber released Bacurau on its Kino Marquee "virtual cinema" platform sharing revenue with independent art houses across the country. Bacurau played in virtual screening rooms in over 200 national markets, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Chicago, Nashville, Washington DC, and many others.

Bacurau will become available on Blu-ray and DVD July 14th, with a SRP of $29.95 for the Blu-ray and $19.95 for the DVD.

Bonus features on the DVD include Bacurau on the Map, a making-of documentary by Kleber Mendonça Filho (60 minutes), a deleted scene, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Juliano Dornelles and Sonia Braga in conversation (courtesy of Film at Lincoln Center), and the theatrical trailer. Additional bonus features on the Blu-ray edition include a new interview with Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, Mens sana in corpore sano (2011, a short film by Juliano Dornelles), and a booklet essay by film critic Fabio Andrade.

Bacurau is also now available to rent and buy digitally on KinoNow.com.

Synopsis:
A few years from now...

Bacurau, a small village in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants (among them Sônia Braga) notice that their village has literally vanished from online maps and a UFO-shaped drone is seen flying overhead.

There are forces that want to expel them from their homes, and soon, in a genre-bending twist, a band of armed mercenaries led by Udo Kier arrive in town picking off the inhabitants one by one. A fierce confrontation takes place when the townspeople turn the tables on the villainous outsiders, banding together by any means necessary to protect and maintain their remote community. The mercenaries just may have met their match in the fed-up, resourceful denizens of little Bacurau.

TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE' (1990)

Brace yourself for some KILLER stories.

Four ghoulish fables in one modern nightmare. On August 25, 2020, Scream Factory proudly presents the anthology Tales from the Darkside: The Movie. (Collector’s Edition) in its ultimate Blu-ray debut. The horror fan-favorite comes home in a release packed with bonus features, including a new audio commentary with co-producer David R. From the clever and creepy minds of Stephen King (Pet Sematary), Michael McDowell (Beetlejuice), George A. Romero (Dawn of the Dead) and Arthur Conan Doyle (creator of Sherlock Holmes), comes an all-star anthology of horror.

To keep from being eaten by a modern-day witch (Deborah Harry, Videodrome), a young paperboy weaves three twisted stories to distract her. In "Lot 249," a vengeful college student (Steve Buscemi, Fargo) resuscitates an evil mummy to teach unsuspecting student bodies (Julianne Moore, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Christian Slater, Mr. Robot) a lesson in terror. Then, "The Cat From Hell" is a furry black feline who cannot be killed ... he may have nine lives, but those who cross his path are not so lucky. Finally, in "Lover's Vow," a stone gargoyle comes to life ... to commit murder. In this classic cult favorite, fear comes in threes.
